The measurement and control technology manufacturer JUMO taps new potential in the area of communication technology. Being part of the IO-Link community now presents the company with many opportunities for achieving intelligent manufacturing.
IO-Link is the first globally standardized IO technology (IEC 61131-9) for communicating with sensors and actuators. The efficient point-to-point communication is based on the well-known three-wire sensor and actuator connection without further additional requirements for the cable material. IO-Link is consequently not a fieldbus, but the evolutionary further development of the previous proven connection technology for sensors and actuators.
The connection between the IO-Link master and device is performed via an unshielded three-core cable with a maximum length of 20 meters. Each port in the IO-Link master is able to process binary switching signals and analog values (e.g. 8-bits, 12-bits, and 16-bits). The serial IO-Link communication takes place via the same port. Among the many advantages are the simple wiring, automated parameterization, and extended diagnosis.
In addition, a particularly rapid initial startup of machines and plants along with a simple connection and exchange of standard sensors are possible thanks to IO-Link. Users no longer have to deal with the complex parameterization of sensors. Downtimes are minimized as a result. The remote diagnosis options are particularly convenient even in the sensor.
